The Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC)

The Canadian Restricted Firearm Safety Course (CRFSC) was created in collaboration with the provinces and territories, as well as with organizations that express a marked interest in education for shooters and the safe use of restricted firearms. It was adopted by the Department of Justice in 1994 in order to offer training on the safe handling, use, transport and storing of restricted firearms.

Pre-requisite training

This course is for target shooters, collectors, security guards and anyone else who wishes to obtain or use restricted firearms. It offers the required knowledge to safely handle this type of firearm. This course is compulsory to obtain a possession and acquisition license for restricted or prohibited firearms.

Duration of the course: Expect from eight to ten hours (including the tests)

Cost: $77 includes a manual, a practice test and theory exam.

The exam

The subjects addressed in the course:

  • The evolution of firearms, the main elements, the types of firearms and the mechanisms;
  • The basic practices for safely handling firearms;
  • The ammunition;
  • How the mechanisms of handguns function;
  • The techniques and methods of shooting handguns;
  • Maintenance of restricted firearms;
  • Responsibilities of firearm owners and users;
  • Safely storing, displaying, transporting and handling restricted firearms.
