Cowboy Action Shooting

photo
CAS:

This activity is practiced within a legal and linguistic framework in Quebec while maintaining the AMERICAN SASS standards. For example, the way in which IPSC is practiced in Quebec is different than in the rest of the world, but maintains the same standards that have been established. There are currently about thirty identified CAS shooters and a private database will be established.

History:

This organization, which came together under the name SASS (Single Action Shooting Society), was created 30 years ago and now has more than 100,000 members in more than 20 countries. In Canada, there are 25 affiliated clubs, with only one in Quebec at this time. The term Action in the acronym CAS (Cowboy Action Shooting) reflects the single-action revolver, the main weapon of choice.

CAS participants choose an alias that is appropriate for a character from the 19th century and take on characteristics from the American Far West period. They use two simple action revolvers that are holstered, a pistol caliber lever action rifle and a shotgun. This discipline was ratified by the Sûreté du Québec in 2006, and exists in Quebec since 2007!

Calibers:

From .32 to .45 Colt for the revolver/rifle (generally .38 SP, .44 SP and .45 Colt).
Maximum velocities: Revolver 1,000 ft./sec., Rifle 1,400 ft./sec.

NO modern caliber (later than 1900) 9 mm, 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum, etc.

Shotgun, 12, 16, 20 gauges, 7, 7½, 8 shot.

Smokeless powder or black powder. Lead bullets only.

Competition:

A match includes several stages where three types of weapons are used. Each stage includes a historical scenario or sequence of events. The targets are mainly made out of metal and are reactive. CAS is more of a friendly meet than a competition. For more information, read "CAS, A New Discipline" and "Match Rules and Procedure".

All matches are approved by the Fédération québécoise de tir.

FD:

Fast Draw shooting uses a .45 Colt revolver and .45 Colt shell casings with, at most, six grains of black powder and wax bullets. Modified casings for 209 primers without powder are also permitted.
