Pistol: The semi-automatic pistol was developed at the beginning of the 20th century and its popularity has since continued to rise. It was first used in the military, followed by civilians and police forces. Today, it is the most popular type of handgun, particularly for target shooting and competitions.

The pistol chambers can contain cartridges from .22 LR to .50 AE. It has two advantages compared to revolvers: it contains more rounds and is quicker to reload. Semi-automatic pistols contain at most 10 rounds while a mid-sized revolver contains six. As well, the mechanism in a pistol automatically ejects the empty shell casing after each shot. When the shooter reloads his firearm, he removes the empty magazine and inserts a full one. This is quicker than opening the revolver's barrel, manually removing the shell casings and inserting six cartridges inside the barrel.

Revolver: However, there are advantages to revolvers over pistols. They are safer, more solid and their chambers can hold a wider variety of cartridges, including magnum and high calibers.

There are two types of revolvers: single action (SA) and double action (DA). Generally, the shape of the frame and the grip are different on the two types.
